PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

JUNE 25 - JULY 2, 2000

Join Garry Black on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, for a week long photographic workshop. Grand Manan is the largest of the Bay of Fundy Isles. It is 35 kilometers from mainland New Brunswick, a two-hour ferry ride from Blacks Harbour, N.B. The Island is wedge-shaped, 24 kilometers long and 11 kilometers wide. On Grand Manan, we will photograph the fishing villages, sunrises and sunsets, sandy beaches, rocky shores and cliffs, early summer wildflowers (lupines and daisies), old homes and lighthouses and the friendly people who live on the island. The weather on Grand Manan is a typical maritime climate, very unpredictable, which is another feature that makes this island an ideal location for our photography workshop.

The structure of the workshop is such that we can take advantage of the best times of day for shooting; these sessions are planned for early in the morning and late afternoon and evening. The instructional programs will be given later in the morning. On most days you will be given a couple of hours free time; some people use this for shooting on their own, while others catch up on some sleep.

Instructional programs will cover a variety of topics, from the basic technical skills, to improving your photographic vision with an increased awareness of the visual elements, such as tones, colour, shapes, lines, size, direction, and textures. All of these elements are extremely important for good visual design. We will hold evaluation sessions, in which your work from the field trips will be critiqued. On site E-6 processing will be available.

Our field trips will take full advantage of our location. We will cover the whole island photographically. We will also be taking a boat trip to Machias Seal Island (optional - cost $60.00 and weather permitting) where we will photograph Puffins, Arctic Terns and Razor-billed Auks. These field trips will provide practical hands-on experience for dealing with all aspects of photography including scenics, close-ups, composition, use of colour, exposure, lenses, quality of light and the effects of different weather conditions. While the field trips help you to perfect your technical skills, they also provide an opportunity to learn how to use and organize the visual elements in creating a photograph.

The date of the week long workshop is, June 25 to July 2, 2000. You arrive on Sunday afternoon and depart the following Sunday morning. There will be six full days of intense photography during this workshop. The cost of the one-week workshop is $1360.00, which includes tuition, accommodation (7 nights) and all meals at the Shorecrest Lodge. Enrollment is limited to 11 persons for this workshop.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation will be provided at the Shorecrest Lodge in North Head on Grand Manan Island. The Bay of Fundy is in front of the lodge and a forest is its backyard. The lodge has ten rooms, all with private bath. The meals at the Shorecrest are excellent. As we are going to be the only people staying at the Shorecrest, we will have the run of the lodge (no need to tiptoe around when getting up for sunrise). We have a conference room in which there will be light tables, projectors and screens for our use. We will have on-site daily processing available for your Fujichrome, Ektachrome and Agfachrome slide films. Processing costs are not included in the workshop fee.

ENROLLMENT

Since applications are accepted on a first-come, first served basis, a deposit of $300.00 payable to Garry Black Photography is required to reserve your space. The balance is due 45 days prior to the start of the workshop. If you cancel prior to the 45 days, your deposit, less a $50.00 cancellation fee, will be refunded. If you cancel after that time, the deposit (less cancellation fee) will be refunded only if another applicant fills the space. Every effort will be made to fill reservations vacated from the waiting list.

You are welcome to bring a non-photographing friend, they will enjoy the same hospitality and adventure, but without photographic instruction. The cost for a non-photographer sharing a room is an additional $240.00 The total cost for two people taking the workshop and sharing accommodation is $2050.00

After receipt of your completed registration form, you will receive an information packet containing travel and transportation information, as well as suggestions as to what to bring in the way of photographic equipment and clothing. As we will be travelling around the island to photographic sites, cars will be necessary. We will try to arrange car pools, in past workshops this has not been a problem.
