PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

JUNE 17-24, 2000

WITH GARRY BLACK AND DALE WILSON

GARRY BLACK'S P.E.I. IMAGE GALLERY

DALE WILSON'S P.E.I. IMAGE GALLERY

Prince Edward Island is one of the world's most enchanting islands. We chose P.E.I. as a location for our workshop because it offers an endless list of possible subject matter to shoot. Once you cross the Confederation Bridge you will find yourself in a land with some of the most photogenic fishing and farming communities in the country, and a natural scenery second to none including endless beaches waiting to be explored. Our goal will be to teach you how to create pictures that are not merely record shots of the island, but are creative and interpretative scenes.

Your instructors have travelled extensively across P.E.I. and we both agree that the North Shore is the ideal base for our workshop. In addition to being the most photographically exciting region of the province, it is also central, thereby allowing easy day trips outside of the immediate area including the capital city of Charlottetown with its historic buildings. Our field trips will discover Prince Edward Island National park, unique red clay roads, country churches, lighthouses, and potato fields which stretch as far as your imagination. We should also expect a full bouquet of wildflowers, especially the prolific and colourful lupine.

On this workshop come prepared to live and sleep photography. Your days will be full. Most days will begin early in order to catch the sunrise. Following breakfast back at the Inn, we will go out shooting again, or we may take a boxed lunch with us to visit another part of the island. On other days we will hold instructional slide presentations or there will be critiques of the student's slides. Later in the afternoon we will again go out shooting or have classroom instruction. Most days there will be a couple of hours of free time to relax or explore on your own. Our days will vary, largely dependent on the weather.

One of the many benefits of having two instructors is that during the slide instructional programs you will see two different approaches to techniques and style of photography. You can draw from both approaches to help you develop your own creative style. When working by yourself to develop your own style it is not uncommon for photographers to become stuck on a plateau, photographing the same subjects the same way over and over again. One of the aims of this workshop is to get you off that plateau and up to the next level of visual awareness. Helping us to achieve this will be our critique sessions, in which both instructors will give their thoughts and opinions about your images.

INSTRUCTORS

GARRY BLACK is, for the most part, a self taught photographer. He started photography as a hobby, but in 1986, he decided to devote his time and energy to photography on a full time basis. He had discovered that with photography he had found a medium that enabled him to express his creative abilities. He has been teaching photographic workshops since 1984 and today is regarded as one of Canada's leading creative photographers.

His travels have taken him from coast to coast in Canada, as well as the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe, Eastern United States and Africa. Since 1987, he has been represented by Masterfile, one of the world's best stock image agencies.

DALE WILSON is a professional photographer based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Growing up at his family's farm in the rural community of River Hebert, N.S. gave Dale a love and understanding for the land and nature. Dale joined the Canadian Military at a young age then wanting to pursue a career as a photographer, in 1990 he resigned from the military.

He joined PHOTO LIFE as a contributing editor in 1993 and has written in excess of 40 photography based articles for a variety of trade magazines. In 1994 received a contract as a contributing artist with Masterfile. He is sponsored by Fuji Photo Film Canada Inc. as a featured lecturer - keynote speaker with Creative Light Photography Seminars. Last year, along with Daryl Benson he published A Guide to Photographing The CANADIAN LANDSCAPE.
