PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

JUNE 16-23, 2002

INSTRUCTOR GARRY BLACK

P.E.I. IMAGE GALLERY

Prince Edward Island is one of the world's most enchanting islands. The reason that I have chosen P.E.I. as a location for a workshop is because it offers an endless list of possible subject matter to shoot. Once you cross over from the mainland either on the Confederation Bridge, or the Wood Islands ferry. You will find yourself in a land with some of the most photogenic fishing and farming communities in the country, and a natural scenery second to none including endless beaches waiting to be explored. My goal will be to teach you how to create pictures that are not merely record shots of the island, but are creative and interpretative images.

Over the years I have travelled extensively across P.E.I. and in my opinion the North Shore is the ideal base for the workshop. In addition to being the most photographically exciting region of the province, it is also central, thereby allowing easy day trips outside of the immediate area including the capital city of Charlottetown with its historic buildings. Our field trips will discover Prince Edward Island National park, unique red clay roads, country churches, lighthouses, even a waterfall, and potato fields which stretch as far as your imagination. We should also expect a full bouquet of wildflowers, especially the prolific and colourful lupine.

On this workshop come prepared to live and sleep photography. Your days will be full. Most days will begin early in order to catch the sunrise. Following breakfast back at the Inn, we will go out shooting again, or we may take a boxed lunch with us to visit another part of the island. On other days we will hold instructional slide presentations or there will be critiques of the student's slides. Later in the afternoon we will again go out shooting or have classroom instruction. Most days there will be a couple of hours of free time to relax or explore on your own. The program that I have set out is structured but I feel that it is in your best interest to be flexible in our daily itinerary. This will be largely dictated by the weather.

A common comment that I hear from photographers is that their photography needs to be re-energized. When working by yourself in developing your own photographic style it is not uncommon for photographers to become stuck on a plateau, photographing the same subjects the same way over and over again. One of the aims of this workshop is to get you off that plateau and up to the next level of visual awareness. Helping you to achieve this will be our critique sessions, in which I will give you my honest thoughts and opinions about your images. You will also benefit from the differing approaches to techniques, style and the vision of the other participants.
