Hi
Everyone! A few of
you have asked me what I think about digital cameras, so here goes. My
thoughts about digital cameras are mixed. Sometimes I think
they're a really good idea, then there are other times when I
hear about their shortcomings and their problems and then I don't
think it's such a good idea. So I'm sitting on the fence for now. I will
definitely buy a digital camera some day, but none of the current models -
maybe the next generation. The biggest problems that I know of are; small
file size (at least for what I require for publication) but the technology
is almost there. I know of several photographers who are using digital
cameras and then tweaking the file size. Dust - the CCD sensors are very
prone to becoming dirty, ruining the picture in some cases. The time it
takes to record a high res image to disk is long. You have to download
your images to a storage device - laptop/CD-Writer. Editing, looking at
hundreds (thousands) of slides on the light table is bad enough I don't
like the prospect of editing everything on my computer monitor. Now having
said all that, I do think that digital cameras are good for some people. If
you're not into selling or getting your work published, then the file
size isn't an issue. With a digital camera you will save $$$ on film, as you
won't buy it any more. You won't have to worry about film x-rays at airports.
You can get instant feedback on the pictures that you have just taken, so if
they didn't turn out like you had suspected then you can re-shoot. One thing
that I would suggest whether you buy a digital camera now or later is to
learn Photoshop or some other imaging editing software now. You will
definitely need it for your digital camera files also you can use it for
your existing (slide) images. And those are my thoughts about
digital! Here's a
link to a web page http://www.luminous-landscape.com/techniques/digital-safari.shtml that
Bill Young sent me, it's about a photographer using a Canon D30
digital camera on an African safari. This photographer thinks it's the
greatest. But I have just read http://www.dpreview.com/news/0301/03010702d60question.asp this
article in which Canon is discontinuing the D60. Nikon is supposed to be
bringing out a new model this year and now it looks like Canon will probably
be doing the same. It's possible that 2003 just might be the year that I
buy a digital camera. I'll keep you informed of further developments. Garry
