I wanted to stay in central Edinburgh within walking distance of everything we would want to photograph. I chose the Thistle Hotel as our base for this reason. It is located at the corner of Leith and Princes Street, which is the “Main” Street of Edinburgh. A 10-minute walk to the east from our hotel is Calton Hill, which gives one of the best vantage points in all Edinburgh. The view from there is extraordinary, it’s a great location during the day or at sunset and twilight. Walking around the hill gives you a huge selection of views in all directions. From here you can see the Firth of Forth, Arthur’s Seat, Salisbury Crags, Holyrood Palace and Abbey. By far the best view is that looking west along Princes Street towards Edinburgh Castle. Here you can see the North Bridge, Old Town, Scottish Parliament, Balmoral Hotel, Scott Monument, National Gallery and of course Edinburgh Castle, all areas that we will visit and photograph. Apart from the views there are also several photographic subjects on Calton Hill as well. These are the Dugald Stewart Monument, which makes for a very interesting foreground subject in an Edinburgh skyline shot, the National Monument (based on the Acropolis in Athens) and Nelson’s Monument, which looks like a giant upturned telescope. |
Within the Old Town lies the Royal Mile, which begins at the Castle and ends at Holyrood Palace. The Royal Mile of Edinburgh is lined with several attractions, museums, souvenir shops, restaurants and pubs. It also contains numerous closes (narrow lanes between high buildings) and courts. You could easily spend two days walking along and photographing the Royal Mile alone. |

the Photo Guide to Edinburgh.
The photography isn’t very creative, but it does give a good visual tour of
the city. |
