I've received some e-mails asking various questions about the workshop, I thought I may as well share the answers with everyone else.
1/ CLOTHES
Bring casual clothing - there will be no need to "dress up". Hiking boots or running shoes with a strong gripping tread, New Hampshire is known as the granite state, and for good reason. Walking on wet granite can be treacherous. Speaking of WET, it is also a good idea to bring a rain coat or something that is waterproof (I don't intend to be out if there is a downpour, but if there is a light rain or drizzle be prepared to be outside). It will probably be chilly on some mornings, on my past trips at this time of year the temperature has dropped to 20 º F, so gloves, an ear band or toque, and a warm jacket would be useful.
2/ FILM AND PROCESSING
In my opinion, Velvia is the perfect film for the fall colours - I won't be bringing any other film, other than Velvia. That's not to say other film won't work, it's just my preference.
I am planning on processing around 80 -100 rolls of film for the week or 8 -10 rolls per person, that is if everyone shoots slides. If some are using print film or digital cameras then the slide shooters will get more rolls processed.
3/ FALL COLOUR (COLOR)
An update for the fall color predictions - the truth is I really don't know what to say to you. We have had some rain, and showers are predicted again for tomorrow, but the trees around the Ottawa area (which is in the same weather pattern area as New Hampshire) look to me as if they are still a little "dry". Not as bad as they were a couple of weeks ago. Also Ottawa is typically a week behind in the colors turning. So it could still be a really good year or maybe just average. It is also possible that on the west side of the White Mountains (towards Vermont) that they leaves could just turn brown and drop, they usually receive less rain here than they do on the eastern side. On an equipment note, I really think a red enhancing filter would be worth while.
Here is a link to foliage reports from the Northeast http://www.foliagenetwork.com/northeast_us/index.html it is update every couple of days.
4/ THE LANTERN RESORT - MOTEL & CAMPGROUND
I have confirmed with Norma and John Ahern (the owners) that everyone has their reservations. Check-in 3:00 PM. or after. I have decided not to bring my trailer, I figure that I will have a rough enough of a time getting across the border just with the processing equipment let alone bringing a huge trailer with me. What I have done instead is rented another room to stay in, not to worry I will still be bringing the coffee maker and kettle and a cooler for the cream and milk, and an assortment of cookies.
5/ EVENTS OF THE PAST WEEK
Words can not begin to describe the shock and horror that we all feel right now, no adequate words can found to express our sympathy. I know of 4 different families that have either lost relatives or friends in these attacks, it is a difficult time for everyone. To quote Jim Treat, who is on the workshop and is coming from California "It's been a stressful week and it's time to touch base with nature to make sure the world is in place." Well said Jim!
